Joseph Yaschur, 93, Of Elmwood Park

ELMWOOD PARK, N.J. -- Joseph Yaschur, 93, died Nov. 17. 

He had lived in Elmwood Park since 1951. He was born July 6, 1992, to John and Sophie Yaschur and was raised in Wallington.

Yaschur served honorably in World War II in the U.S. Navy on the USS Hobson, where he earned a Bronze Star for his valiant efforts in restoring power to the ship that had been lost during an explosion.

After returning from the war, he married Helen Elasick in New York City at the Little Church Around the Corner. In 1951, they moved to their home in Elmwood Park. Prior to his retirement in 1986, he worked for the telephone company as the power plant supervisor for northern New Jersey for 35 years.

Yaschur is survived by his loving children, JoAnn Schopperth, John Yaschur III and Ellen Goodman. He also is survived by his two beloved granddaughters and two beloved grandsons.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Helen and his two brothers and three sisters. 

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Warner-Wozniak Funeral Service, 80 Midland Ave., Wallington. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John the Baptist Russian Orthodox Church, 170 Lexington Ave., Passaic Interment will follow at Laurel Grove Cemetery, Totowa.
